The name section prints a trade for twelve of the 15: a painter (2), an attendant, a clerk, an inspector, a jam maker and a labeller, among others. Two of them worked for Empress Manufacturing.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Killarney, Kitsilano, Shaughnessy and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Cullen at 6980 Doman Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Cullen there as the householder, a miner, with Annie Cullen, a seamstress at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists J Cullen at 876 East 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John Cullen there as the householder, an inspector at the Canadian Government.
In 1940 the directory lists E H Cullen at 463 East 57th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward H Cullen there as the householder, a painter, with Colin E Cullen, a painter. In 1940 the directory lists F C Cullen at 2090 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists F C Cullen there as the householder, a clerk at the CPR.
The 1940 name section lists Gerald E Cullen at 1083 Richards Street. E B Cullen is listed at 2063 West 37th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edmund B Cullen there as the householder, a jam maker at Empress Manufacturing, with Marion R Cullen, a labeller at Empress Manufacturing, May Cullen, a saleswoman for L J Osborne, and Reginald C Cullen, an attendant at Shell Oil.
Mrs F A Cullen is listed at 2494 West 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Florence A Cullen there as the householder, with E Gerald Cullen, a salesman at Scott-Bathgate, Madeline A Cullen, and Robert J Cullen, a secretary-treasurer at the International Flattie Yacht Racing Association.
Today
876 East 19th, 2063 West 37th and 2494 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 6980 Doman (1986) and 463 East 57th (2021) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2090 East Pender and 1083 Richards, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
