What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: an accountant, a driver, a general repairs, a laborer, a locksmith and a mechanic, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J S Crouch, in general repairs, at 755 Beatty Street. H L Crouch is listed at 251 East 22nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Herbert L Crouch there, a laborer.

Mrs F Crouch is listed at 1500 Grant Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frances Crouch there as the householder, widow of E W, with Charles Crouch. Mrs S E Crouch is listed at 2421 Oxford Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Susan E Crouch there as the householder, widow of W H.

N Crouch is listed at 804 Powell Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Norman Crouch there as the householder, a locksmith. J Crouch is listed at 4089 Welwyn Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Crouch there as the householder, a driver at M T Co.

The 1940 name section lists Emmie M Crouch at 4131 West 10th Avenue, a saleswoman at Woodward's, with Walter C Crouch. The 1940 name section lists William L Crouch at 320 West 15th Avenue, an accountant. J S Crouch is listed at 2750 West King Edward Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James S Crouch there as the householder, in general repairs, with David C Crouch, and James E Crouch, a mechanic.

Today

4131 West 10th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1930 by the City's record; 755 Beatty (1983), 251 East 22nd (2019) and 4089 Welwyn (1973) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1500 Grant, 2421 Oxford, 804 Powell, 320 West 15th and 2750 West King Edward, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
