The Cousinses

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at nine addresses

The directories print 15 people named Cousins at nine addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Cousinses at 4329 Knight in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 15: a clerk (3), a salesman (2), an attendant, a counter, a janitor and a school teacher, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Kitsilano (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H Cousins at 675 Dunsmuir Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Herbert Cousins there as the householder, a janitor at Imperial Bank Chambers. In 1940 the directory lists A E Cousins at 2225 East 44th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alfred E Cousins there as the householder, an attendant for A P Holland.

In 1940 the directory lists F G Cousins at 4329 Knight Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Cousins there as the householder, a salesman for G R Gregg, with Alice E Cousins, a clerk at the Hudson's Bay Company, and Dorothy M Cousins, a clerk. The 1940 name section lists Edward Cousins at 712 Richards Street. The 1940 name section lists Eleanor C Cousins at 1348 Robson Street, a clerk at Ash-Temple.

In 1940 the directory lists G A Cousins at 1037 Thurlow Street. The 1940 name section lists Gerald A Cousins there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists Miss M J Cousins at 1148 Thurlow Street. The 1940 name section lists Martha J Cousins there as the householder, with Rachel I Cousins, a sewing instructor.

The 1940 name section lists Alice B Cousins at 2409 Trafalgar Street, a counter at National Lunch, with Francis Cousins, a salesman at Woodward's. Mrs S S Cousins is listed at 3225 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sara S Cousins there as the householder, widow of R, with Olive E J Cousins, a school teacher.

Today

1348 Robson and 2409 Trafalgar still have their buildings from before 1946; 2225 East 44th (1987) and 3225 West 12th (2015) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 675 Dunsmuir, 4329 Knight, 1037 Thurlow and 1148 Thurlow, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 712 Richards, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
