The directories print eleven people named Corley at eight addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Corleys at 2052 West 8th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eleven: a clerk (2), a principal clerk, a proprietor and a waitress. Two of them worked for CPR. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Isobel Corley at 1268 Alberni Street, widow of R. The 1940 name section lists James Corley at 1608 Franklin Street, retired. In 1940 the directory lists S A Corley at 1721 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists Stewart A Corley there as the householder, proprietor of B Corley's Service Station.

In 1940 the directory lists W P Corley at 3275 West 24th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William P Corley there as the householder, a clerk at the CPR, with Patricia J Corley, a student. In 1940 the directory lists T J Corley at 2163 West 2nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Terence J Corley there as the householder, a principal clerk & collector at the City of Vancouver.

In 1940 the directory lists Miss F M Corley at 2052 West 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Florence M Corley there as the householder, a clerk at the CPR, with Margaret S Corley, widow of J S. The 1940 name section lists J Corley at 53 West Hastings Street, retired. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Christina Corley at 5815 Yew Street, a waitress at Willingdon Coffee Shop.

Today

3275 West 24th, 2052 West 8th and 53 West Hastings still have their buildings from before 1946; 5815 Yew (1965) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1268 Alberni, 1608 Franklin, 1721 Main and 2163 West 2nd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
