What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 17: a clerk (2), a laborer (2), a chauffeur, a maid, a manager and a proprietor. Two of them worked for Dunn's Tailors. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (3), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, South Cambie and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Zella Conn at 2934 Birch Street. C B Conn is listed at 1065 Bute Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Clarence B Conn at 1086 Bute Street as the householder, of Dunn's Tailors, with George L Conn, of Dunn's Tailors.

Mrs M E Conn is listed at 420 East 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Mary E Conn there as the householder, widow of W H. The 1940 name section lists John Con at 329 East Pender Street, proprietor of John Wo Co. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Rose R Conn at 1212 Granville Street.

Today

1065 Bute, 1086 Bute, 329 East Pender, 1212 Granville, 3498 Napier and 3819 West 31st still have their buildings from before 1946; 5225 Macdonald (1994) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2934 Birch, 420 East 8th, 5751 Vine, 1434 West 13th, 949 West 27th and 1736 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
