Where the Collisons lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 14: a salesman (3), a clerk, a credit reporter, a musician, a physician and a proprietor, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kerrisdale (2), West End (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Dr D B Collison at 6958 Angus Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists David B Collison there as the householder, a physician. The 1940 name section lists George A Collison at 1274 Barclay Street, a musician, with Mildred Collison, a stenographer, and Thelma Collison, a credit reporter at Retail Credit Grantors. J A Collison, a grocer, is listed at 897 East 35th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too.

In 1940 the directory lists L Collison at 502 East Broadway. By 1940 it is Mrs I M Collison, a grocer. The 1940 name section lists Leonard Collison there as the householder, a salesman for Mrs I M Collison.

Rev H A Collison is listed at 5584 Maple Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Rev Henry A Collison there as the householder, with Denis M Collison, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. W H Collison is listed at 1183 Pacific Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William H Collisson there as the householder, with Doug C Collisson, a salesman at Spencer's, and William E G Collisson, a salesman at Woodward's.

G J Collison is listed at 2992 West 41st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George J Collison there as the householder, proprietor of the Coast Inn Service. D B Collison, a physician, is listed at 925 West Georgia Street in 1940.

Today

5584 Maple still has its building from before 1946, dated 1932 by the City's record; 1274 Barclay (1979) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6958 Angus Drive, 897 East 35th, 502 East Broadway, 1183 Pacific, 2992 West 41st and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
