What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a maid (2), an apprentice, a clerk, a department manager, a nurse and a proprietor.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kerrisdale (2), Shaughnessy (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A E Collett at 7111 Angus Drive. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists A Edgar Collett there as the householder, a department manager at Birks. In 1940 the directory lists G Collett, a secretary hand furniture, at 2246 Commercial Drive. The 1940 name section lists Maizie M Collett at 1575 Laurier Avenue, a maid for G W Wooster.

In 1940 the directory lists G Collett at 2634 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists George Collett there as the householder, proprietor of the Boot & Shoe Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Joyce Collett at 2970 Oak Street, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Eugenie Q E Collett at 1950 West 18th Avenue, a maid for G W Swisland.

In 1940 the directory lists T Collett at 3547 West 23rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Collett there as the householder, a clerk at the West Hotel, with Norman Collett, an apprentice for E Lipsett. In 1940 the directory lists W J Collett at 2174 West 48th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Walter J Collett there as the householder, retired.

Today

7111 Angus Drive, 1575 Laurier, 2970 Oak, 1950 West 18th, 3547 West 23rd and 2174 West 48th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 2246 Commercial Drive and 2634 Main, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
