What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a bridgeman, a dentist, a druggist, a meat cutter, a millworker and a salesman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Downtown, Kitsilano, Marpole, Riley Park, South Cambie, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Albert E Colborne at 863 East Hastings Street, a bridgeman. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Charlotte Colburn at 1039 Nicola Street. In 1940 the directory lists H R Colbourne at 4596 Quebec Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Henry R Colbourne there as the householder, a meat cutter at Spencer's Model Market, with H Jack Colbourne, a millworker at Sterling Lumber.

In 1940 the directory lists F W Colburn at 987 West 23rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Francis W Colburn there as the householder, a yardman at the CPR. In 1940 the directory lists J S Colbourne at 3215 West 27th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James S Colbourne there as the householder, a druggist at Cunningham Drug.

In 1940 the directory lists R H Colbourne at 3505 West 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ralph H Colbourne there as the householder, a dentist. In 1940 the directory lists W C Colbourn at 3549 West 4th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William C Colbourn there as the householder, a salesman at Hunter-Henderson Paint.

In 1940 the directory lists W Colbourne at 1371 West 71st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter Colbourne there as the householder, retired, with Mary A Colbourne, a stenographer at the Royal Bank. In 1940 the directory lists R H Colbourne, a dentist, at 925 West Georgia Street.

Today

4596 Quebec, 987 West 23rd and 3215 West 27th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1371 West 71st (1961) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 863 East Hastings, 3505 West 28th, 3549 West 4th and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 1039 Nicola, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
