The Clarks

In the city directories 1940 · eight people at five addresses

The directories print eight people named Clark at five addresses in 1940, all on East 7th Avenue, with the close spelling Clarke. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Clarks at 101 East 7th in 1940. The directories print the name on 176 other streets too, all listed on the Clark name's own page.

The name section prints a trade for six of the eight: a clerk (2), a foreman, a proprietor, a salesman and a school teacher. Two of them worked for Golden Arrow Creameries.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (4) and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists R E Clark at 101 East 7th Avenue. By 1940 it is G O Clark. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Guy O Clark there as the householder, proprietor of Clark's Dairy Lunch and a managing director at Golden Arrow Creameries, with Roy E Clark, a salesman at the Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association, Edmund W Clark, a clerk at Golden Arrow Creameries, and Phyllis E Clark. A B Clarke is listed at 1482 East 7th Avenue in 1940.

The 1940 name section lists Clair T Clark at 1492 East 7th Avenue, a foreman at F & F Equipment. A E Clarke is listed at 1803 East 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert E Clarke there as the householder, a clerk at the Post Office.

N M Clarke is listed at 1851 East 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Norman M Clarke there as the householder, a school teacher.

Today

101 East 7th, 1803 East 7th and 1851 East 7th still have their buildings from before 1946, 101 East 7th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1492 East 7th (1974) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1482 East 7th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
