The Cheesemans

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at six addresses

The directories print eleven people named Cheeseman at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Chesman. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Cheesemans at 3240 West 36th in 1940.

Where the Cheesemans lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a stenographer (2), a bookkeeper, a doorkeeper, a manager, an operator and a salesman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas Cheeseman at 1423 Howe Street. G Cheeseman is listed at 3925 Knight Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Cheesman there as the householder, retired.

Mrs I J Cheeseman is listed at 1344 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ida J Cheeseman there as the householder, an operator at the BC Telephone, with George Cheeseman, a doorkeeper at the Shipping Fed of BC. The 1940 name section lists Agnes A Cheeseman at 3582 West 11th Avenue, widow of J.

In 1940 the directory lists L D Chesman at 3240 West 36th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Lester D Chesman there as the householder, a salesman at Ker & Ker, with Gladys Chesman, a stenographer at North American Life, and Jack M Chesman. In 1940 the directory lists F G Cheeseman at 2868 West 39th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Fred G Cheeseman there, a manager at F G Cheeseman Ltd, with Alice A Cheeseman, a stenographer at the Royal Bank, and Bessie Cheeseman, a bookkeeper for F G Cheeseman.

Today

3925 Knight, 3582 West 11th and 3240 West 36th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2868 West 39th (2000) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1423 Howe and 1344 Nelson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
