The Castles

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Castle at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Castles at 3508 East 47th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a driver, a mechanic, a nurse, a police officer, a proprietor and a salesman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Downtown, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Killarney. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Earl D Castle at 2428 Birch Street, a mechanic. The 1940 name section lists Joseph Castle at 355 Burrard Street. In 1940 the directory lists R O Castle at 1924 East 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Rupert O Castle there as the householder, a police officer at the City of Vancouver, with Kate Castle, widow of C.

In 1940 the directory lists G O Castle at 3508 East 47th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George O Castle there as the householder, a salesman for Davis White, with Barbara J Castle, who worked for the BC Electric Railway, and Elizabeth M Castle, a student. The 1940 name section lists Joan R Castle at 3524 Point Grey Road, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Wesley C J Castle at 1949 West 5th Avenue, proprietor of Pill Box Pharmacy.

The 1940 name section lists George H Castle at 3532 West 5th Avenue, a driver.

Today

355 Burrard, 1924 East 19th and 3532 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946, 3532 West 5th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3508 East 47th (1993) and 1949 West 5th (1965) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2428 Birch and 3524 Point Grey Road, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
