The Browns

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at nine addresses

The directories print 13 people named Brown at nine addresses in 1940, all on West 13th Avenue, with the close spelling Browne. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Browns at 3205 West 13th in 1940. The directories print the name on 254 other streets too, all listed on the Brown name's own page.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a stenographer (2), a carpenter, a clerk, a printer, a salesman and a shipwright. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (5), Fairview (2) and West Point Grey (2). Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur R Brown at 550 West 13th Avenue, a salesman at Brown Fraser. The 1940 name section lists Lillian Brown at 1540 West 13th Avenue, widow of O. In 1940 the directory lists I Brown at 2866 West 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ivor Brown there as the householder, with E Betty Brown, a stenographer at Furness (Pacific).

In 1940 the directory lists T Browne at 3156 West 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Browne there as the householder, a printer at the Kitsilano Times. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J E Brown at 3205 West 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Jeanie E Brown there as the householder, widow of T J, with David H P Brown, a clerk at the Royal Bank, and Dorothy V E Brown, a stenographer at Powell River Co.

The 1940 name section lists David A Brown at 3258 West 13th Avenue, with Gladys L Brown. M S Brown is listed at 3536 West 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Maurice S Brown there as the householder, a shipwright. The 1940 name section lists Annie Brown at 4005 West 13th Avenue.

In 1940 the directory lists O W Brown at 4114 West 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Oscar W Brown there as the householder, a carpenter.

Today

1540 West 13th, 2866 West 13th, 3258 West 13th and 3536 West 13th still have their buildings from before 1946; 3156 West 13th (2013) and 4005 West 13th (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3205 West 13th and 4114 West 13th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 550 West 13th, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
