What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: an accountant, a biller, a carpenter, a filer, a holder on and a proprietor, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Riley Park (2), Downtown, Fairview and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W F Broderick at 2540 Cambridge Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Elva F Broderick there, a biller. The 1940 name section lists Elmer Broderick at 365 East 19th Avenue, a holder on at N Vancouver Ship Repairs.
E M Broderick is listed at 1441 East 21st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Everett M Broderick there as the householder, a filer at J Chew Shingle. F R Broderick, an insurance adjuster, is listed at 470 Granville Street in 1940.
In 1940 the directory lists F F Broderick at 1187 Kingsway. The 1940 name section lists Frank F Broderick there as the householder, proprietor of Regal Transfer. In 1940 the directory lists E Broderick at 2545 Main Street.
E H Broderick is listed at 2816 Trinity Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward H Broderick there as the householder, with John Broderick, a carpenter. G A Broderick is listed at 1216 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George A Broderick there as the householder, an accountant at Standard Oil, with Alice M Broderick, widow of M, and Mabel E Broderick.
Mrs A Broderick is listed at 209 West 16th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ann Broderick there as the householder, widow of E, with Edward C Broderick, a salesman at Grant, Atkinson & Blair, and Kathleen A Broderick, a stenographer for Kelly Douglas.
Today
2540 Cambridge, 365 East 19th, 470 Granville, 2545 Main and 209 West 16th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1441 East 21st (2009) and 2816 Trinity (2020) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1187 Kingsway and 1216 West 14th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
