What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eight: a clerk (2), a fireman (2), an ironworker, a proprietor and a telephone operator. Four of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kitsilano and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Stan Brereton at 3630 Cameron Avenue, an ironworker. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Harriett Brereton at 1160 Comox Street, a telephone operator at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists W E Brereton at 2659 East 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William E Brereton there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.

In 1940 the directory lists A H Brereton at 3040 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Albert H Brereton there as the householder, a clerk at the City of Vancouver, with Mrs Prudence C Brereton, proprietor of Mayflower Delicatessen. In 1940 the directory lists S P Brereton at 2503 McGill Street. The 1940 name section lists Stan P Brereton there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists A Brereton at 3609 McGill Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alfred Brereton there as the householder, a clerk at the City of Vancouver, with A Dorothy Brereton, a stenographer. In 1940 the directory lists A E Brereton at 4043 West 20th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert E Brereton there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.

Today

1160 Comox and 2659 East 7th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1160 Comox on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3609 McGill (2006) and 4043 West 20th (2008) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3630 Cameron, 3040 Granville and 2503 McGill, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
