The directories print 15 people named Bradford at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Bradfords at 759 Bute in 1940.

What they did

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), West End (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Killarney and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W H Bradford at 777 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William H Bradford there as the householder, a building superintendent for H A Roberts, with Mrs Pearl D Bradford, a manager at the Irwinton Apartments. The 1940 name section lists Irene M E Bradford there as the householder, a bookkeeper, with Leonard S Bradford, and Margaret E Bradford, widow of G.

In 1940 the directory lists W H Bradford at 2986 East 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William H Bradford there as the householder, a janitor. In 1940 the directory lists P T Bradford at 2828 East 47th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Percy T Bradford there as the householder, a painter.

The 1940 name section lists Bradford (no first name printed) at 1261 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Florence Bradford at 1517 Robson Street, widow of J C. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Bradford at 1226 West 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs E Bradford there as the householder, with Marjorie Bradford, an executive director at the Vancouver Council of Social Agencies.

In 1940 the directory lists P Bradford at 3020 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Philip Bradford there as the householder, a janitor at the Marine Building, with Bernard M Bradford, a helper at Canadian Wind Bakeries, and John M Bradford, a mechanic.

Today

777 Burrard, 1261 Granville, 1226 West 11th and 3020 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2986 East 3rd (1984) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 759 Bute, 2828 East 47th and 1517 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
