What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 15: a druggist, a glazier, a manager, a sawyer, a waitress and a warehouseman. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (4), West End (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Shaughnessy and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G A Boyer at 3956 Alice Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists George A Boyer there as the householder, a glazier. The 1940 name section lists Beatrice E Boyer at 5416 Cypress Street. The 1940 name section lists Pearl Boyer at 836 Hamilton Street.

The 1940 name section lists Cecil Boyer at 813 Hornby Street, with Mrs Gertrude Boyer, a manager at the Iris Apartments. C A Boyer is listed at 610 Jervis Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles A Boyer there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Boyer at 1115 Nelson Street, a warehouseman at Hobbs Glass.

The 1940 name section lists Kathleen Boyer at 741 Thurlow Street, a waitress at U & I Cafe. Mrs L Boyer is listed at 6464 Vine Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Louisa Boyer there as the householder, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists Frederick D Boyer at 849 West 19th Avenue, retired, with Frederick N Boyer, a sawyer at Overseas Wood Products.

In 1940 the directory lists T Boyer at 1073 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Trefle Boyer there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists R H Boyer at 2336 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ralph H Boyer there as the householder, a druggist for Mrs M I Haughton, with Amanda J Boyer, widow of N S.

Today

5416 Cypress, 610 Jervis and 849 West 19th still have their buildings from before 1946, 610 Jervis on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1115 Nelson (1969) and 2336 West 7th (1999) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3956 Alice, 836 Hamilton, 813 Hornby, 741 Thurlow, 6464 Vine, 1073 West 7th and 177 West Cordova, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
