What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a laborer (2), a candy maker, a cashier, an electrician, an engineer and a printer. Two of them worked for Vancouver City.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), Downtown, Fairview, Killarney and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists F Boutilier at 2652 Duke Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick Boutilier there as the householder, a laborer. In 1940 the directory lists H R Boutilier at 2752 Duke Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herman R Boutilier there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver.
In 1940 the directory lists C W Boutilier at 359 East 35th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Clif W Boutilier there as the householder, a candy maker. In 1940 the directory lists J A Boutilier at 3192 East 45th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James A Boutilier there as the householder, a printer, with Mildred R Boutilier.
In 1940 the directory lists L Boutilier at 2425 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Lawrence Boutilier there as the householder, an engineer. The 1940 name section lists Boutilier (no first name printed) at 806 Richards Street.
W C Boutilier is listed at 1731 Stephens Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter C Boutilier there as the householder, an electrician at the City of Vancouver. Mrs M P Boutilier is listed at 3347 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs May P Boutilier there as the householder, a cashier at the Stanley Theatre.
Today
1731 Stephens and 3347 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946; 359 East 35th (2011) and 3192 East 45th (1965) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2652 Duke, 2752 Duke, 2425 Granville and 806 Richards, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
