The Bourques

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Bourque at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Bourques at 2709 Venables in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the eleven: an accountant, a blacksmith, a clerk, a comptroller operator, an oiler and a shipper, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Fairview and Grandview-Woodland. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A M Bourque at 3593 East Georgia Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Annie M Bourque there as the householder, widow of R, with Frances M Bourque, a stenographer at National Dress. In 1940 the directory lists L Bourque at 2359 East Hastings Street. The 1940 name section lists Laurier Bourque there as the householder, a tanner for P Paris.

The 1940 name section lists Yvonne Bourque at 876 Granville Street, a waitress at French Cafe. A C Bourque is listed at 2709 Venables Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists A Cyrille Bourque there as the householder, a blacksmith, with C Aime Bourque, a shipper, and Ray Bourque, an oiler. The 1940 name section lists Rudolph Bourque at 2365 West 1st Avenue, an accountant at the Royal Bank.

The 1940 name section lists Francis G Bourque at 2525 West 6th Avenue, a clerk at the Bank of N S. Mrs M L Bourque is listed at 1765 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Marie L Bourque there as the householder, widow of P E, with Loretta A Bourque, a comptroller operator at Associated Dairies.

Today

3593 East Georgia, 2359 East Hastings, 876 Granville and 2709 Venables still have their buildings from before 1946; 2365 West 1st (1959) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1765 West Broadway, so that building is probably gone (inferred); for 2525 West 6th, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
