What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the twelve: a salesman (2), a barber, a clerk, an engineer, a finisher and a manager, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Dunbar-Southlands (2), West End (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Killarney, Renfrew-Collingwood and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J T Bonner at 3247 East 44th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John T Bonner there as the householder, a polisher at Birks. The 1940 name section lists Barbara Bonner at 1146 Harwood Street, an operator at the BC Telephone. The 1940 name section lists Hector Bonner at 1339 Harwood Street, a salesman for A Lloyd.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E J Bonner at 2570 Hemlock Street. The 1940 name section lists E Jessie Bonner there as the householder, widow of C H. In 1940 the directory lists G C Bonner at 1345 Laburnum Street. The 1940 name section lists George C Bonner there as the householder, a barber at New York Barber Shop.

The 1940 name section lists Benjamin Y Bonner at 2503 Pandora Street, a watchman at Dominion Bridge. S R Bonner is listed at 7490 Prince Edward Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sam R Bonner there as the householder, a clerk at the BC Electric Railway.

G Bonner is listed at 4950 Spencer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Bonner there as the householder, a finisher at the West Coast Woollen Mills. The 1940 name section lists W T Bonner at 3181 West 27th Avenue, a salesman.

In 1940 the directory lists C J E Bonner at 3945 West 31st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clarence J E Bonner there as the householder, an engineer. The 1940 name section lists Rita S Bonner at 3642 West Broadway, a secretary at Slavin's Funeral Service.

T Bonner is listed at 1406 Yew Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Bonner there as the householder, a manager at Kitsilano Pavilion.

Today

2570 Hemlock, 2503 Pandora, 4950 Spencer, 3181 West 27th and 3945 West 31st still have their buildings from before 1946; 1146 Harwood (1974) and 7490 Prince Edward (1995) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3247 East 44th, 1339 Harwood, 1345 Laburnum, 3642 West Broadway and 1406 Yew, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
