The Blythes

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at ten addresses

The directories print 15 people named Blythe at ten addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Blyth. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Blythes at 2258 West 8th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 15: a salesman (3), a carpenter, a clerk, an elevator operator, a musician and a nurse, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Kitsilano (2), West End (2), Downtown, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W Blyth at 1066 Davie Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Blyth there as the householder, a carpenter, with Margaret E Blyth, an elevator operator at the Medical Dental Building. The 1940 name section lists C Edward Blyth at 3607 Dunbar Street, a salesman at Macaulay, Nicolls, Maitland.

W G Blythe is listed at 1137 East 29th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William G Blythe there as the householder, a salesman. Mrs J Blyth is listed at 165 East 59th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Jeanie Blyth there as the householder, widow of E G.

I Blythe, an optometrist, is listed at 825 Granville Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Irvine Blyth there. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Eleanor H Blythe at 1402 Robson Street, a nurse at Fisher & Burpe.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs S E Blythe at 3703 West 20th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Susie E Blythe there as the householder, widow of A E, with Charles E Blythe, a police officer at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists J M Blythe at 3634 West 4th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John N Blythe there as the householder, a sign writer.

The 1940 name section lists Gordon Blythe at 1548 West 8th Avenue, a musician. C W Blyth is listed at 2258 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Carrington W Blyth there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal, with Graham F Blyth, a salesman at the BC Electric Railway, and Muriel E M Blyth, a telephone operator at Crofton Export.

Today

3607 Dunbar, 1137 East 29th, 165 East 59th, 825 Granville and 3634 West 4th still have their buildings from before 1946; 3703 West 20th (2000) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1066 Davie, 1402 Robson, 1548 West 8th and 2258 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
