The Blands

In the city directories 1940 · 14 people at eleven addresses

The directories print 14 people named Bland at eleven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Blands at 966 Burrard in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 14: a carpenter, a chief clerk, a draftsman, a dressmaker, an employee and a messenger. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (4), Kitsilano (3), Downtown, Riley Park, Strathcona and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Jane Boland at 966 Burrard Street, with Mary A Boland and Olivia Boland. G Bland is listed at 542 East 52nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists George Bland there as the householder, a carpenter at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Frank Boland at 217 East Cordova Street.

The 1940 name section lists Cath Boland at 1111 Nelson Street, a dressmaker. The 1940 name section lists Rev Charles E Bland at 1749 Nelson Street. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs I Bland at 3528 Point Grey Road. The 1940 name section lists Isabel Bland there as the householder, widow of J W, with Percival N Bland, a draftsman at the Canadian Summer Iron Works.

The 1940 name section lists George Bland at 1124 Robson Street, who worked for La Fonda. The 1940 name section lists Herbert Bland at 741 Thurlow Street, retired. The 1940 name section lists John A Boland at 4539 Walden Street, a messenger.

B R Bland is listed at 3617 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Brian R Bland there as the householder, a chief clerk at the BC Telephone. The 1940 name section lists George H Bland at 2355 West 5th Avenue, retired.

Today

3528 Point Grey Road, 4539 Walden and 3617 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946; 542 East 52nd (1997) and 1124 Robson (2002) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 966 Burrard, 217 East Cordova, 1111 Nelson, 1749 Nelson, 741 Thurlow and 2355 West 5th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
