The directories print 16 people named Blain at ten addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Blaine. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Blains at 2553 Dundas in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the 16: an employee, a grocer, a machinist, a purchasing agent and a stenographer.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Downtown (2), Grandview-Woodland (2), Fairview, Kitsilano and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In July 1922 John Blaine took out the permit to build a store at 1902 Charles Street. In 1940 the directory lists J Blaine at 1902 Charles Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Blaine there as the householder, a grocer, with Mary T Blaine, a student.

In 1940 the directory lists J Blain at 2553 Dundas Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Blain there as the householder, who worked for the BC Telephone, with Constance Blain and Vera Blain. In 1940 the directory lists Blain at 828 Dunsmuir Street. The 1940 name section lists Blain there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists L B Blain at 2960 Turner Street. L B Blain is listed at 2975 Turner Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Lorne B Blain there as the householder, a purchasing agent at Lawrence Manufacturing. J Blaine, a grocer, is listed at 1302 Victoria Drive in 1940.

The 1940 name section lists Nevina Blaine at 4477 Walden Street. A Blain is listed at 2240 Waterloo Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Amos Blain there as the householder, who worked for the Shaughnessy Hospital Canadian Government, with Dorothy H Blain. The 1940 name section lists Mrs M Blain at 801 West Georgia Street.

In 1940 the directory lists J W Blain at 3110 Willow Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James W Blain there as the householder, a machinist at the BC Electric Railway, with Irene M Blain, a stenographer.

Today

1902 Charles, 2553 Dundas, 2975 Turner, 4477 Walden, 2240 Waterloo and 801 West Georgia still have their buildings from before 1946, 801 West Georgia on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2960 Turner (1989) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 828 Dunsmuir, 1302 Victoria Drive and 3110 Willow, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
