The Blackleys

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Blackley at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Bleackley. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Blackleys at 3279 Findlay in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the ten: a general secretary, an on active service, a packer, a pressman and a salesman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G Blackley at 656 Commercial Drive. T S Bleackley is listed at 342 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas S Bleackley there as the householder, a salesman at Jones Tent & Awning. The 1940 name section lists John Blackley at 241 East 17th Avenue, retired.

The 1940 name section lists John Blackley at 1336 East 20th Avenue. A Blackley is listed at 3279 Findlay Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Andrew Blackley there as the householder, with Janet McH Blackley, a packer at Swifts, and William D Blackley, a pressman at Gehrke's.

A Blackley is listed at 3210 Napier Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Allen Blackley there as the householder, on active service. H M Blackley is listed at 1550 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hamilton M Blackley there as the householder, retired, with Mabel H Blackley, a general secretary at the YWCA.

Today

656 Commercial Drive, 241 East 17th and 1336 East 20th still have their buildings from before 1946; 3210 Napier (1968) and 1550 West 15th (1993) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 342 East 14th and 3279 Findlay, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
