What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the nine: a barber, a fireman, a laborer, a longshoreman, a painter and a school janitor. Two of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Mount Pleasant (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Marpole, Riley Park and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists L Berger at 942 East 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Louis Berger there as the householder, a painter. In 1940 the directory lists A Berger at 2187 East 33rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Anton Berger there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver.

The 1940 name section lists Etzek Berger at 637 East Pender Street, retired. The 1940 name section lists Anthony Berger at 1112 Hornby Street. The 1940 name section lists J Berger at 2979 Ontario Street.

E W Berger is listed at 4305 Ontario Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edward W Berger there as the householder, a school janitor at the City of Vancouver. The 1940 name section lists Ignatz Berger at 416 Robson Street, a longshoreman.

In 1940 the directory lists H A Berger at 841 West 67th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry A Berger there as the householder, a fireman at H M Shingle. In 1940 the directory lists J Berger at 409 West Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Jack Berger there as the householder, a barber at Dominion Theatre Barber Shop.

Today

942 East 11th, 2187 East 33rd and 2979 Ontario still have their buildings from before 1946; 841 West 67th (1981) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 637 East Pender, 1112 Hornby, 4305 Ontario, 416 Robson and 409 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
