The Belyeas
In the city directories 1940 · 14 people at ten addresses
The directories print 14 people named Belyea at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Belyeas at 2823 Waterloo in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 14: a clerk (2), a baker, a decorator, a laborer, a mechanic and a president, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Shaughnessy (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists D A Belyea, a decorator, at 6826 Arbutus Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists David A Belyea there as the householder, a decorator, with Ken W Belyea, a clerk for W C Pitfield. In 1940 the directory lists F N Belyea at 1780 East 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frederick N Belyea there as the householder.
The 1940 name section lists Winnifred J Belyea at 2046 East 50th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ina Belyea at 1942 Graveley Street, a clerk. The 1940 name section lists Miss E Belyea at 1857 Nelson Street, a stenographer at the BC Government.
A Belyea is listed at 2823 Waterloo Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Adirine Belyea there as the householder, a baker, with Jean Belyea, and John R Belyea, a laborer at Canadian White Pine. The 1940 name section lists Barbara S Belyea at 1585 West 15th Avenue, widow of A L.
In 1940 the directory lists J F Belyea at 1307 West 33rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John F Belyea there as the householder, a president at Gordon & Belyea. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Belyea at 3125 West 33rd Avenue, a mechanic.
H S A Belyea is listed at 1920 West 36th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Hanford S A Belyea there as the householder, of Belyea & Son, with Ernest H Belyea, of Belyea & Son.
Today
1780 East 2nd, 1942 Graveley, 2823 Waterloo, 1585 West 15th, 1307 West 33rd and 3125 West 33rd still have their buildings from before 1946, 1585 West 15th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1920 West 36th (1987) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6826 Arbutus, 2046 East 50th and 1857 Nelson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
