Where the Beasleys lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a clerk, an engineer, a machinist, a manager, a mechanic and a saw filer, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (4), Renfrew-Collingwood (3), Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H R Beasley at 1552 Davie Street. H C Basley is listed at 601 Denman Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harry C Basley there as the householder, a saw filer.

J E Beasley is listed at 5336 Dumfries Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John E Beasley there as the householder, an engineer. J Beasley is listed at 2681 East 22nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John Beasley there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Percival J Beasley at 2964 East 28th Avenue, a mechanic at Whitely Bros S & D. The 1940 name section lists Alice Beasley at 1111 Jervis Street, widow of R. F Beasley is listed at 459 Ontario Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too.

In 1940 the directory lists P M Beasley at 1901 Pendrell Street. The 1940 name section lists Percy M Beasley there as the householder, a superintendent cargo, with George H Beasley, a machinist. In 1940 the directory lists R H Beasley at 3883 Rupert Street. The 1940 name section lists Ron H Beasley there as the householder, a clerk at the National Harbours Board.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Betty Beasley at 829 Smithe Street. L J Beasley is listed at 4089 West 19th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Leslie J Beasley there as the householder, a manager at Vancouver Salt. The 1940 name section lists Alfred Besley at 219 West Georgia Street.

Today

1111 Jervis still has its building from before 1946, dated 1928 by the City's record and on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 5336 Dumfries (1960), 2964 East 28th (1991), 3883 Rupert (1959) and 4089 West 19th (2019) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1552 Davie, 601 Denman, 2681 East 22nd, 459 Ontario, 1901 Pendrell, 829 Smithe and 219 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
