What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the ten: a car cleaner, a laborer, a millworker, a painter and a watchman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Fairview and Grandview-Woodland. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H O Beale at 1625 Balsam Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harry O Beale there as the householder, with John O H Beale, who worked for General Insurance. In 1940 the directory lists J Beale at 1935 Grant Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Beale there as the householder, a car cleaner at the BC Electric Railway, with John F Beale, a car cleaner at the BC Electric Railway, Joyce Beale, and Richard C Beale.

In 1940 the directory lists A Beale at 1129 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Beale there, who kept rooms to let. In 1940 the directory lists W H Beale at 2564 Parker Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William H Beale there as the householder, a watchman at American Can, with Doris E Beale.

In 1940 the directory lists W G Beale at 1772 Renfrew Street. The 1940 name section lists William G Beale there as the householder, a laborer. In 1940 the directory lists H F Beale at 2227 West 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert F Beale there as the householder, a millworker, with Harry Beale, an utilityman at Homalko Log.

The 1940 name section lists Frederick J Beale at 653 West Broadway, a painter.

Today

1935 Grant, 1129 Granville and 2564 Parker still have their buildings from before 1946; 1772 Renfrew (1948) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1625 Balsam, 2227 West 8th and 653 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
