What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 14: a clerk (2), a comptroller operator, an engineer, a mechanic, a mining and a packer, among others. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Fairview, Kitsilano, Shaughnessy, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists T Ballantine at 2142 East 46th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas Ballantine there as the householder, a mechanic, with Ralph Ballantine. In 1940 the directory lists W. A Ballentine at 2880 Eton Street. The 1940 name section lists William A Ballentine there as the householder, a packer at Brewers & Bottlers Supplies.

In 1940 the directory lists R A Ballentine at 2115 Macdonald Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists R Allan Ballentine there as the householder, in mining, with Ellen V Ballentine, widow of G P. In 1940 the directory lists J W Ballantine at 1436 Pendrell Street. The 1940 name section lists John W Ballentine there as the householder, an engineer.

The 1940 name section lists Isabelle Ballentine at 2856 Wall Street, widow of A R. Mrs L E Ballentine is listed at 1146 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Louisa E Ballentine there as the householder, widow of G P, with A Jean Ballentine, a comptroller operator at Standard Oil, George Van N Ballentine, a clerk at Hall Holland, Helen M Ballentine, a technician at the Vancouver General Hospital, Kathryn L Ballentine, a stenographer, and Ken W Ballentine, a clerk for Nesbitt Thomson.

E B Ballentine is listed at 1520 West 36th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists E Blake Ballentine there as the householder, a vice-president and general manager at BC Plywoods.

Today

2115 Macdonald, 1436 Pendrell and 2856 Wall still have their buildings from before 1946, 1436 Pendrell on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2880 Eton (1974) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2142 East 46th, 1146 West 11th and 1520 West 36th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under B. Want a name removed? Tell us.
