What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: a bookkeeper, a clerk, a janitor, a mechanic, a notary and a school teacher, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver General Hospital.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (4), Mount Pleasant (2), West End (2) and Kerrisdale. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W S Ashley at 6579 Angus Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Wilfred S Ashley there as the householder, a school teacher. In 1940 the directory lists S E Ashley at 1199 Bidwell Street. The 1940 name section lists Sid E Ashley there as the householder, a clerk at the Imperial Bank.

In 1940 the directory lists A E Ashley at 831 Hamilton Street. The 1940 name section lists Alfred E Ashley there as the householder, a janitor. The 1940 name section lists George A Ashley at 625 Hornby Street.

S W Ashley is listed at 1901 Pendrell Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sid W Ashley there as the householder, a technician at the Vancouver General Hospital, with Jean T Ashley, a stenographer at the Vancouver General Hospital. B Ashley is listed at 421 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Bruce Ashley there, a bookkeeper.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Elsie Ashley at 155 West 11th Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists D T Ashley at 397 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists David T Ashley there as the householder, a notary for E A Alm. The 1940 name section lists Syd Ashley at 440 West Pender Street, a mechanic.

Today

6579 Angus Drive (1987) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1199 Bidwell, 831 Hamilton, 625 Hornby, 1901 Pendrell, 421 Robson, 155 West 11th, 397 West 14th and 440 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
