What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eight: a salesman (2), a porter, a principal and a proprietor.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Downtown and Dunbar-Southlands. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In August 1906 Yonekichi Aoki took out the permit to build a frame house at 313 Alexander Street (inferred): the register's number for it is uncertain, but the owner's name is the one the directories list there. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs K Aoki, rooms to let, at 313 Alexander Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Kiyo Aoki there, who kept rooms to let, with Tomeo Aoki, a salesman for M Furuya. In 1940 the directory lists T Aoki at 1319 Commercial Drive.

F M Aoki is listed at 3467 Dunbar Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Fred M Aoki there as the householder, proprietor of Ohio Cleaners. The 1940 name section lists Inosuke Aoki at 633 East Cordova Street as the householder, a salesman at Union Fish. The 1940 name section lists Ichitaro Aoki at 223 Main Street, a porter at the Great Northern Railway.

The 1940 name section lists Yozo Aoki at 568 Powell Street. In 1940 the directory lists S Aoki at 1934 Triumph Street. The 1940 name section lists Sadayashi Aoki there as the householder, a principal at the Japanese School.

Today

313 Alexander, 633 East Cordova and 568 Powell still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1319 Commercial Drive, 3467 Dunbar, 223 Main and 1934 Triumph, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
