The Airds

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at eight addresses

The directories print 13 people named Aird at eight addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Airds at 1326 Burrard in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a salesman (3), an agent, a farmer, a meat cutter, a photographer and a proprietor, among others. Two of them worked for Mutual Life.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J M Aird at 1326 Burrard Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John M Aird there as the householder, an agent for Mutual Life, with Hugh Aird and Susan Aird. In 1940 the directory lists H Aird, rooms to let, at 989 Thurlow Street. The 1940 name section lists Hugh Aird there, who kept rooms to let, with George Aird, a meat cutter for G Jackson.

In 1940 the directory lists J Aird at 2056 Triumph Street. The 1940 name section lists John Aird there as the householder, a salesman, with Cath M Aird, a saleswoman. The 1940 name section lists Thomas W Aird at 354 West 12th Avenue, a farmer.

T K Aird is listed at 2350 West 35th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas K Aird there as the householder, a salesman for Mutual Life. A Aird is listed at 1969 West 45th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Aird there as the householder, retired.

D McG Aird is listed at 3767 West 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David McG Aird there as the householder, a photographer at King Studio, with Mrs Yolande Aird, proprietor of Broughdale Kindergarten. T Aird is listed at 3519 West King Edward Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Aird there as the householder, a salesman, with Thomas Aird Jr, a salesman at Jordans.

Today

354 West 12th and 3519 West King Edward still have their buildings from before 1946; 2056 Triumph (2002) and 1969 West 45th (2017) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1326 Burrard, 989 Thurlow, 2350 West 35th and 3767 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
