What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the twelve: a clerk (2), a mechanic (2), a proprietor and a salesman. Three are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kerrisdale (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Killarney, Shaughnessy, South Cambie and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M B Worrall at 3169 Adanac Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Minnie B Worrall there as the householder, widow of P W, with Elsie M Worrall, a clerk. In 1940 the directory lists W I Worrall at 3336 Dundas Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter I Worrall there as the householder, a mechanic at Pender Garage.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J Worrall at 2879 East 44th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Janet Worrall there as the householder, widow of C. In 1940 the directory lists J Worrall at 2123 East Broadway; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James H Worrall there as the householder, proprietor of Broadway Grocery, with J Hildred D Worrall, an inspector at the BC Electric Railway.
In 1940 the directory lists W Worrall at 4716 Pine Crescent; the 1940 line is marked * too. Mrs O Worrall is listed at 4184 West 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Olive Worrall there as the householder, widow of E L. The 1940 name section lists Frank Worrall at 3895 West 18th Avenue, a clerk.
In 1940 the directory lists E H Worrall at 1936 West 41st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ernest H Worrall there as the householder, with Isabelle Worrall, a student. In 1940 the directory lists A W Worrall at 2163 West 49th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Amos W Worrall there as the householder, a mechanic.

Today
4716 Pine Crescent, 4184 West 13th, 3895 West 18th, 1936 West 41st and 3520 Willow still have their buildings from before 1946; 2879 East 44th (1957) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3169 Adanac, 3336 Dundas, 2123 East Broadway and 2163 West 49th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
