What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a cashier, a clerk, a driver, an employee, a mechanic and a reporter, among others. Two of them worked for Canadian Fishing. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Hastings-Sunrise (3), Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Marpole and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Claire E Windsor at 1046 Granville Street, a driver at Arctic Ice. The 1940 name section lists Harvey Windsor at 953 Homer Street. In 1940 the directory lists A A Windsor at 7749 Montcalm Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert A Windsor there as the householder, a mechanic, with George A E Windsor, a clerk at Canadian John Wood.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E E Windsor at 1958 Napier Street. The 1940 name section lists Edith E Windsor there as the householder, widow of E, with Albert E Windsor, a reporter at the Sun. In 1940 the directory lists H M Windsor at 3504 Triumph Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry M Windsor there as the householder, a superintendent at the Evans Coleman Wharf, with Verona E Windsor, a cashier at Woodward's.

In 1940 the directory lists A W Windsor at 2445 Turner Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alfred W Windsor there as the householder, who worked for Canadian Fishing. In 1940 the directory lists A C Windsor at 2554 Turner Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alfred C Windsor there as the householder, a watchman at Canadian Fishing.

In 1940 the directory lists G E Windsor at 1585 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists George E Windsor there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Mary Windsor at 195 West 18th Avenue. Homes Windsor, in building contractors, is listed at 640 West Hastings Street in 1940.

Today

1046 Granville, 1958 Napier, 3504 Triumph, 2554 Turner and 1585 West 15th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1585 West 15th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 195 West 18th (1990) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 953 Homer, 7749 Montcalm, 2445 Turner and 640 West Hastings, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
