The Watermans

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at eight addresses

The directories print twelve people named Waterman at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Watermans at 2766 East 22nd in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: an accountant, a clerk, an employee, an orderly, a painter and a proprietor, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Renfrew-Collingwood (2), West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kerrisdale and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Constance Waterman at 1256 Comox Street. V Waterman is listed at 2705 East 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Vernon Waterman there as the householder, who worked for Canada Roof Products.

Miss E Waterman is listed at 2766 East 22nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ellen Waterman there as the householder, a waitress at Spencer's, with David H Waterman, a painter. The 1940 name section lists Annie Waterman at 1259 Robson Street, widow of J E.

In 1940 the directory lists R H Waterman at 3408 Sophia Street. The 1940 name section lists Rex H Waterman there as the householder, an orderly at the Vancouver General Hospital. In 1940 the directory lists G J Waterman at 1390 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists George J Waterman there as the householder, an accountant at C Barrett-Lennard, with Beth Waterman, a stenographer at R Macdonald & Co.

In 1940 the directory lists A Waterman at 2956 West 36th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Archibald Waterman there as the householder, with John D Waterman, a clerk. The 1940 name section lists Asser Witterman at 6477 Yew Street, proprietor of Famous Coffee Shop.

Today

3408 Sophia, 1390 West 14th and 6477 Yew still have their buildings from before 1946, 1390 West 14th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2705 East 15th (1985) and 2956 West 36th (2008) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1256 Comox, 2766 East 22nd and 1259 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
