In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at nine addresses

The directories print 13 people named Vickers at nine addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Vickerses at 601 Bute in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a compositor, a hairdresser, a laborer, a manager, a manufacturers agent and a sales supervisor, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Sunset (2), West Point Grey (2), Riley Park and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A G Vickers at 601 Bute Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur G Vickers there as the householder, a manager at the Stadacona Apartments, with Jack Vickers, a compositor for A H Timms, and Lionel Y Vickers, a warehouseman. In 1940 the directory lists S Vickers at 274 East 39th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Stan Vickers there as the householder, a salesman at Scott-Bathgate.

The 1940 name section lists Sid Vickers at 87 East 46th Avenue, retired. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Vickers at 658 East 65th Avenue, a laborer at Shell Oil. In 1940 the directory lists F C Vickers at 441 Glen Drive. The 1940 name section lists Frederick C Vickers there as the householder, a wiper at Hammond's.

In 1940 the directory lists S Vickers, a manufacturers agent, at 312 Water Street. J D Vickers is listed at 4629 West 6th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John D Vickers there as the householder, a sales supervisor at Canadian Johns Manville.

S Vickers is listed at 4236 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Sam Vickers there as the householder, a manufacturers agent, with G Peter Vickers, and Pauline Vickers, a student. Mrs C Vickers is listed at 303 West Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Connie Vickers there as the householder, a hairdresser.

Today

601 Bute, 658 East 65th, 312 Water and 4629 West 6th still have their buildings from before 1946, 601 Bute on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 274 East 39th (1978) and 87 East 46th (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 441 Glen Drive, 4236 West 8th and 303 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under V. Want a name removed? Tell us.
