The Turkingtons

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Turkington at seven addresses in 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Turkingtons at 562 West 7th in 1940.

Where the Turkingtons lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Two addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a proprietor (2), a bodyman, a bookkeeper, a laborer, a teamster and a welder. Some worked for the same employer: two for Auto Electric Co and two for Vancouver City. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (3), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2) and Riley Park (2). Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J Turkington at 1829 East 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James Turkington there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists H Turkington at 383 East 35th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold Turkington there as the householder, a bodyman at Medical Building Garage.

In 1940 the directory lists C E Turkington at 2396 East Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Clarke E Turkington there as the householder, proprietor of Nanaimo Confectionery. The 1940 name section lists Eva M Turkington at 1774 West 16th Avenue, widow of J S. The 1940 name section lists Wilfred J Turkington at 385 West 21st Avenue, a welder at the McLean & Powell Iron Works.

In 1940 the directory lists S Turkington at 559 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sam Turkington there as the householder, a teamster at the City of Vancouver, with Mary E Turkington. In 1940 the directory lists S Turkington at 562 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sam Turkington there as the householder, retired, with Herbert R Turkington, proprietor of the Kitsilano Electric, Margaret Turkington, a bookkeeper at the Auto Electric Co, and William S Turkington, of Auto Electric Co.

Today

383 East 35th and 1774 West 16th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1829 East 14th (1976), 2396 East Broadway (1979) and 385 West 21st (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 559 West 7th and 562 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
