What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a gardener (2), an agent, a boomman, a fisherman and a grocer.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (5), Strathcona (3) and Grandview-Woodland (2). Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists U Tsuji at 342 Alexander Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Uyomon Tsuji there as the householder, a fisherman. In 1940 the directory lists Tsuji (no first name printed) at 629 East Cordova Street.

R Tsuji is listed at 1672 Franklin Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ryotaro Tsuji there as the householder, an agent. A Tsuji is listed at 1829 Pandora Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Asakichi Tsuji there as the householder, a boomman at Sterling Lumber.

The 1940 name section lists Kaihai Tsuji at 215 Princess Avenue, with Nobuichi Tsuji. In 1940 the directory lists Tsuji (no first name printed) at 1618 West 2nd Avenue. I Tsuji, a grocer, is listed at 1633 West 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ichijiro Tsuji there, a grocer.

T Tsuji is listed at 1533 West 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Tokataro Tsuji there as the householder, a gardener. T Tsuji is listed at 1613 West 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Tokichi Tsuji there as the householder, a gardener.

Today

215 Princess and 1633 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 1829 Pandora (1969) and 1755 West 3rd (1962) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 342 Alexander, 629 East Cordova, 1672 Franklin, 1618 West 2nd, 1533 West 3rd and 1613 West 3rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
