The Trumps

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at six addresses

The directories print eleven people named Trump at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Trumps at 4435 West 12th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for four of the eleven: a gardener, a manager, a manufacturers agent and a poultryman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Fairview, Kerrisdale, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Trump at 1161 Broughton Street, with Velma Trump. C F Trump, a manufacturers agent, is listed at 543 Granville Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists W E Trump at 4435 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Walter E Trump there as the householder, a manager at Bapco, with Curtis Trump, a student, Edward Trump, a student at UBC, and M Jean Trump.

In 1940 the directory lists C F Trump at 1572 West 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Clarence F Trump there as the householder, a manufacturers agent. The 1940 name section lists Jack Trump at 2605 West 37th Avenue, a gardener at the Point Grey Golf & Country Club.

E Trump is listed at 3020 West 53rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edwin Trump there as the householder, a poultryman, with Alfred T Trump, a student.

Today

1161 Broughton, 4435 West 12th, 2605 West 37th and 3020 West 53rd still have their buildings from before 1946, 4435 West 12th and 2605 West 37th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 543 Granville (1995) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1572 West 13th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
