What they did

Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Oakridge, Shaughnessy, South Cambie, Sunset, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alex Templeton at 1128 Alberni Street. T Templeton is listed at 6141 Argyle Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Thomas Templeton there as the householder, a tailor, with Thomas M Templeton.
J S Templeton is listed at 33 East 50th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John S Templeton there as the householder, a laundryman. E W Templeton is listed at 3241 Oak Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edwin W Templeton there as the householder, a timber inspector.
The 1940 name section lists William A Templeton at 1570 West 32nd Avenue, an electrician and gas inspector at the Canadian Government. In 1940 the directory lists F J Templeton at 2982 West 32nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Francis J Templeton there as the householder, a school teacher. The 1940 name section lists William L Templeton at 3562 West 42nd Avenue, in advertising.
F A Templeton is listed at 535 West 52nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. In 1940 the directory lists M M Templeton at 2746 William Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Math M Templeton there as the householder, a foreman for J R Donald.
Today
2982 West 32nd and 2746 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 1128 Alberni (1998), 6141 Argyle (1965), 33 East 50th (2011), 1570 West 32nd (1998) and 3562 West 42nd (1995) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3241 Oak and 535 West 52nd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
