What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the 16: a barber, a confectioner, a laborer, a manager and a proprietor.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (8), Downtown (6), Fairview and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Directories Sun at 500 Beatty Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Town Sun at 430 East Hastings Street, a barber. The 1940 name section lists Ah Sun at 100 East Pender Street, a manager at the Dai Quon Rooms. The 1940 name section lists Noon York Fong Sun at 113 East Pender Street.

In 1940 the directory lists Quen Yen Sun at 162 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists Quen Yen Sun there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists Tuey Sun at 530 Gore Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Tuey Sun there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists Groceteria Sun at 911 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Wing Sun at 2020 Granville Street, proprietor of Sun Wing Fur. In 1940 the directory lists Hong Kee Sun, a grocer, at 322 Keefer Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).

Today

100 East Pender, 3537 Main, 382 Powell and 675 West Hastings still have their buildings from before 1946; 430 East Hastings (1981), 911 Granville (1992) and 568 Keefer (1979) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 500 Beatty, 113 East Pender, 162 East Pender, 530 Gore, 2020 Granville, 322 Keefer, 455 Keefer, 525 Main and 543 Main, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
