The Stovers

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at six addresses

The directories print twelve people named Stover at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Stovers at 786 Hamilton in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a cashier, a clerk, a laundry worker, an on active service, an operator and a purser, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Marpole, Victoria-Fraserview, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Stover (no first name printed) at 1154 Comox Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Stover there as the householder, on active service. The 1940 name section lists Miss A Stover at 1265 East 19th Avenue, a relief elevator operator at the BC Electric Railway.

H Stover is listed at 2754 East 44th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hersher Stover there as the householder. Mrs N L Stover is listed at 8851 Granville Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Nellie L Stover there as the householder, widow of E, with Florence N Stover, an operator at Smith's Button Works, and Mary Stover.

R C Stover is listed at 786 Hamilton Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Reginald C Stover there as the householder, a purser at the Union Steamship Company, with Hilton O Stover, a clerk at Broadway Hotel Cigar Stand, Leona M Stover, a cashier, and Richard A Stover, a laundry worker at Pioneer Laundry. The 1940 name section lists May E Stover at 4629 West 2nd Avenue, widow of F S.

Today

1154 Comox, 1265 East 19th and 4629 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946, 1154 Comox and 4629 West 2nd on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 8851 Granville (1989) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2754 East 44th and 786 Hamilton, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
