A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Stockers
In the city directories 1940 · nine people at six addresses
The directories print nine people named Stocker at six addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Stockers at 1336 West 11th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the nine: an attendant, a dairyman, a driver, a millworker, a nurse and a salesman.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Riley Park (2), Downtown, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise and Kerrisdale. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists A H Stocker at 6826 Angus Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur H Stocker there as the householder, a salesman at Canadian Bakeries. The 1940 name section lists Robert G Stocker at 2847 East Hastings Street, a millworker. The 1940 name section lists Harold V Stocker at 4478 James Street, a driver at the BC Electric Railway.
In 1940 the directory lists Miss L A Stocker at 1336 West 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Louise A Stocker there as the householder, a nurse, with Edith I Stocker, who worked for the Vancouver General Hospital. In 1940 the directory lists F C Stocker at 440 West 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick C Stocker there as the householder, a dairyman at the Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association, with Stan Stocker, an attendant at Broadway Recreations.
The 1940 name section lists William Stocker at 177 West Pender Street.
Today
4478 James, 1336 West 11th and 440 West 18th still have their buildings from before 1946; 177 West Pender (1952) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6826 Angus Drive and 2847 East Hastings, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
