A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Stewards
In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at eight addresses
The directories print 13 people named Steward at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Stewards at 1240 Howe in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: an apprentice, a clerk, a driller, a gardener, a laborer and a manager, among others.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, Kerrisdale and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs F L Steward at 5563 Balsam Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Frances L Steward there as the householder, with Joseph H Steward, a laborer at Canadian White Pine, and William B Steward, a driller. In 1940 the directory lists H Steward at 1450 East 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Horace Steward there as the householder, retired, with Horace W Steward, a clerk.
In 1940 the directory lists B R Steward at 4468 Gladstone Street. The 1940 name section lists Bernard R Steward there as the householder, a mechanic. In 1940 the directory lists F G Steward at 1240 Howe Street. The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Steward there as the householder, with George J J Steward, an apprentice for A H Timms, James F Steward, a meat cutter, and Margaret Steward, an operator for Gordon Campbell.
The 1940 name section lists William A Steward at 1038 Main Street, a manager at the Ivanhoe Hotel. The 1940 name section lists David Steward at 3536 West 23rd Avenue, a gardener for Mrs L B Yeo. The 1940 name section lists Mary E Steward at 2225 West 51st Avenue.
Mrs M Steward, rooms to let, is listed at 1330 West Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Martha Steward there, who kept rooms to let.
Today
1450 East 10th and 1038 Main still have their buildings from before 1946, 1038 Main on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 4468 Gladstone (2005), 1240 Howe (1980), 3536 West 23rd (1993) and 2225 West 51st (1976) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 5563 Balsam and 1330 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
