A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Sternes

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at seven addresses

The directories print twelve people named Sterne at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Stern. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Sternes at 8233 Montcalm in 1940.

Where the Sternes lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Two addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the twelve: a clerk, a decorator, a fireman, a machinist operator, a machinist tender and a mechanic, among others. Two of them worked for CP Express. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Marpole, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A B Sterne at 3658 Cambridge Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alfred B Sterne there as the householder, a mechanic for W C Arnott. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Stearne at 1164 Comox Street, a decorator. The 1940 name section lists Betty Sterne at 526 East 20th Avenue, widow of C A.

In 1940 the directory lists E C Sterne at 1944 Franklin Street. The 1940 name section lists Earl C Sterne there as the householder, a fireman at the CNR. In 1940 the directory lists E K Sterne, rooms to let, at 926 Hornby Street. The 1940 name section lists Evan K Sterne there as the householder, a machinist operator at the Province who kept rooms to let.

In 1940 the directory lists C Stern at 3425 McGill Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Carl Stern there as the householder, an upholsterer, with Violet Stern, a machinist tender at Bertram Paper Products, and Wodam Stern, a seaman. In 1940 the directory lists F Stern at 8233 Montcalm Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Stern there as the householder, a clerk at CP Express, with Muriel I Stern, a saleswoman at Spencer's, Norman F Stern, and Percy J Stern, a warehouseman at CP Express.

Today

3658 Cambridge and 1164 Comox still have their buildings from before 1946, 1164 Comox on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 526 East 20th (1989), 1944 Franklin (1979) and 8233 Montcalm (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 926 Hornby and 3425 McGill, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
