The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Downtown, Fairview, Shaughnessy, South Cambie, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Lillian Stead at 858 Burrard Street, a waitress. The 1940 name section lists Kathleen Stead at 1081 Burrard Street, a waitress at the St Pauls Hospital. The 1940 name section lists O Stead at 956 Main Street.

G W Stead is listed at 2908 Oak Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Gordon W Stead there as the householder, an accountant at McKeen & Wilson. F Stead is listed at 4630 Osler Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frank Stead there as the householder, an accountant at the Langley Electric, with Mrs Ethel Stead, a president at the Daughters of the Empire.

J R Stead is listed at 968 West 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John R Stead there as the householder, who worked for the CPR. C Stead is listed at 3141 West 39th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clifton Stead there as the householder, a gardener.

W A Stead is listed at 3803 West 39th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Wilfred A Stead there as the householder, an office manager at the Vancouver Hotel.

Today

1081 Burrard, 956 Main, 2908 Oak, 968 West 20th and 3141 West 39th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1081 Burrard on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 4630 Osler (2011) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 858 Burrard and 3803 West 39th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
