A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Squires
In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses
The directories print ten people named Squire at eight addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Squires at 1050 Howe in 1940.

The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists E W Squire at 1123 East King Edward Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Elgin W Squire there as the householder, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Squire at 1006 Harwood Street, who worked for Boeings.
W Squire, rooms to let, is listed at 1050 Howe Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William Squire there as the householder, with Anna Squire, a shipper at Snowflake Cleaners & Dyers, and James Squire. The 1940 name section lists Aubrey Squire at 1587 West 12th Avenue, on active service.
In 1940 the directory lists A J Squire at 4407 West 15th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Alfred J Squire there as the householder, a steamship inspector at the Canadian Government. In 1940 the directory lists E T Squire at 1915 West 35th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Earl T Squire there as the householder, a shop foreman at the Canadian (BC) Telephone.
In 1940 the directory lists R H Squire at 1308 West 37th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert H Squire there as the householder, a manager at Confederation Life. Today
1123 East King Edward, 4407 West 15th, 1915 West 35th and 1492 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 1050 Howe (1988) and 1308 West 37th (2007) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1006 Harwood and 1587 West 12th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
