What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a cement worker, a driver, a fitter, a log department, a proprietor and a salesman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Fairview, South Cambie and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists R Spooner at 272 Cassiar Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ralph Spooner there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists R W Spooner at 2715 East 56th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Robert W Spooner there as the householder, a driver, with Ivy L Spooner.
In 1940 the directory lists A J Spooner at 2081 East Pender Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert J Spooner there as the householder, a fitter at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists A Spooner at 672 Hornby Street. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Spooner there as the householder, proprietor of Georgia Cleaners, with George A W Spooner.
The 1940 name section lists Leonard J Spooner at 646 Semlin Drive, a cement worker for W Sanderson. The 1940 name section lists Charles H Spooner at 2735 Turner Street, a salesman. In 1940 the directory lists E J Spooner at 1009 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edwin J Spooner there as the householder, a log department at Canadian White Pine.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E M Spooner at 663 West 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edith M Spooner there as the householder, widow of W.
Today
646 Semlin Drive and 1009 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1009 West 10th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2715 East 56th (2013), 2081 East Pender (2013), 2735 Turner (2005) and 663 West 18th (1995) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 272 Cassiar and 672 Hornby, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
