A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Speers

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at eight addresses

The directories print twelve people named Speer at eight addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Speers at 1425 Haro in 1940.

Where the Speers lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the twelve: a branch manager (2), a clerk (2), a salesman (2), a glove maker, a mechanic and a proprietor, among others. Two of them worked for Glovecraft. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (3), West End (3), Sunset and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists D B Speer at 2149 East 47th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Delbert B Speer there as the householder, a mechanic at the Cassiar Service Station. In 1940 the directory lists W J Speer at 641 East 56th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William J Speer there as the householder, a branch manager.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E E Speer at 1425 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists Ethel E Speer there as the householder, widow of W, with Gladys P Speer, proprietor of Glovecraft, and Margaret E Speer, a glove maker at Glovecraft. In 1940 the directory lists D F Speer at 1877 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists Doug F Speer there as the householder, a salesman at the Champion Savings Corporation.

In 1940 the directory lists J H Speer at 5976 Highbury Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John H Speer there as the householder, a clerk at Seaboard Lumber. The 1940 name section lists John Speer at 1112 Robson Street.

R C Speer is listed at 3138 West 28th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Richard C Speer there as the householder, a branch manager at Safeway. L W Speer is listed at 3707 West 35th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Laurence W Speer there as the householder, a salesman at Walker & Worsley, with Carolyn A Speer, a stenographer at Bralorne Mines, and Marjorie Speer, a clerk at Home Oil.

Today

1425 Haro, 1877 Haro, 5976 Highbury and 3707 West 35th still have their buildings from before 1946; 641 East 56th (1983), 1112 Robson (1975) and 3138 West 28th (1992) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2149 East 47th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
