What they did

The name section prints a trade for two of the seven: an assistant manager and an on active service. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Riley Park, Shaughnessy and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F G Solloway at 5392 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Francis G Solloway there as the householder, on active service. In 1940 the directory lists W E V Solloway at 365 East 32nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists E William V Solloway there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists A Solloway, rooms to let, at 611 East Hastings Street. The 1940 name section lists Alec Soloway there, who kept rooms to let. In 1940 the directory lists L T Solloway at 1157 Harwood Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leonard T Solloway there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs F C Solloway at 1033 Pacific Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frances C Solloway there as the householder, widow of A E. In 1940 the directory lists H E Solloway at 1159 West 32nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harold E Solloway there as the householder, an assistant manager at Seaboard Ship.

Today

5392 Blenheim still has its building from before 1946, dated 1927 by the City's record; 365 East 32nd (1989) and 1159 West 32nd (2021) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 611 East Hastings, 1157 Harwood and 1033 Pacific, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
