The Skalings

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at six addresses

The directories print twelve people named Skaling at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Skealing. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Skalings at 5145 Aberdeen in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: a barrister, a bookkeeper, a clerk, a factory worker and a sausage maker. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Skaling at 5145 Aberdeen Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Ethel Skaling there as the householder, with Helen M Skaling and T Russell Skaling. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L Skealing at 1676 Charles Street. The 1940 name section lists Leta Skealing there as the householder, widow of W H, with Allesen Skealing, a student, and Collin Skealing, a clerk at the City of Vancouver.

In 1940 the directory lists A C Skaling, a barrister, at 470 Granville Street. A C Skaling is listed at 1132 Harwood Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists A Clifton Skaling there as the householder, a barrister, with Betty D Skaling, a bookkeeper.

J H Skaling is listed at 256 Vernon Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John H Skaling there as the householder, who worked for Vic & Vancouver Stevedoring, with John R Skaling, a sausage maker at Mullett's. A B Skaling is listed at 4854 Walden Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert B Skaling there as the householder, a factory worker for A D Gunn.

Today

1676 Charles and 470 Granville still have their buildings from before 1946; 5145 Aberdeen (2004) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1132 Harwood, 256 Vernon Drive and 4854 Walden, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
